Dear Everyone;
This is a not-quite-the-last-minute reminder that the Ursa Major
nominations close on Monday, the 15th. If you have been waiting until the
last minute to make your nominations, now is the time to do so.
All of the nominations so far have been made either on our online
nominations form or in personal e.mails to me. A rough survey shows that
there are two or three favorites in most categories (many people are not
nominating more than one or two titles instead of the full five that they
are entitled to), and a lot that have only one or two nominations each,
creating a potential problem of a massive tie vote for the last finalists.
We could resolve this by setting a policy that a title must get at least
three nominations to get onto the final ballot, which might result in some
categories having only three or four nominees instead of the full five. But
this should not be a problem if you will make as many nominations in each
category as you can instead of just a couple.
Remember, the 2003 Recommended List is available if you want suggestions
on what is worth nominating. We are getting several nominations that are
not on the List, which is also good in that it shows that some people are
thinking beyond just the List.

Best wishes;
Fred

I think we should have the full 5 nominations in each category as far as
possible. While that might mean that some categories will have nominations
that only one or two people nominated, I feel we should give the voters as
many as we can from which to choose the winners. We should also note for
any category that has less than 5 nominations that less than 5 works were
nominated in that category.
Any idea when the list of the nominees might be compiled and posted on the
website?
Take care, everyone,
Brock

I agree, but bear in mind that as Fred pointed out there may be a
dozen nominees that are all tied for fourth and fifth place with one
nomination each - then how is the decision to be made as to which ones
become finalists?

In that case we might have to go with fewer than 5 or randomly select which
ones fill out a particular category. In the former case, we should explain
to the fans why there are fewer than 5 in a particular category.
Take care,
Brock
