Not so much the eyecandy, but take a squint at the numbers on the
poll. It shows four THOUSAND plus votes cast for one side of the
poll or the other.
So, how do we build the Ursas to that level?
Judging by the cast page, by featuring big-breasted cowgirls.
How do other award sites do it? Well, to be honest, most of them have been
going for a long time, are in a widely popular industry, and have highly
interested parties which funnel traffic to them. But it's partly by maintaining
their relevance throughout the year, and offering readers something to come
back to both before and after the event.
What would get visitors to spend more time on the site? Look at oscars.com - it
features videos about the event, clips from the nominees and past award
winners, along with details of/features from the works. The UMA has a bunch of
links. Don't get me wrong; those links should be there, but it'd be cool if
there were a bit more content as well.
Think about all the things you could say. Were they nominated last year, or in
previous years? Is there something that stands out about the creator(s)? What
is the most interesting or unique fact about the work? You can see how you'd
start showing up a lot higher on Google for those terms if you had more than a
link.
This stuff takes time to write, of course. You're welcome to copy portions from
WikiFur if you think it would help. For featured articles and comics we have
precreated frontpage snippets in our archives that would be perfect; for others
the lede's a good start. The license requires that you mention the five most
recent authors (available for each article on its history tab), or link back if
you prefer (use the address en.wikifur.com rather than furry.wikia.com, as it
is guaranteed to remain valid).
Basically, there's not much reason to come to the awards site, and people who
aren't there won't nominate or vote. Adding more content is not a complete
solution - you still have to get people to care enough, and streamline the
process - but it couldn't hurt.
