Being a fan of bears in general the logo for the Ursa Major awards has

always bugged me.

Why?

Because bears are plantigrade. Their heels  touch the ground.

But in the logo, the bear is drawn with digigrade feet.

Maybe a more accurate logo is called for?

"RIP William Thomas III, transit worker, railfan, anime fan

It is my sad duty to report the death of William (Bill) Thomas III,
of natural causes this past weekend.

A native of Philadelphia, Bill retired from SEPTA in 2007 with 35
years as a track inspector. Before that, he had worked at the old
Wanamaker's department store in Philadelphia. He was vice-president
of the local chapter of the National Railway Historical Society and
was frequently seen on its chartered fantrips, including the Farewell
to the Silverliner trip in 2012 and the many Reading MU trips in the
1980s. He was a regular presence at East Penn meeting and national
meets, as well as other local train shows, events and groups. He
traveled the world from Europe to Canada to Japan, recording
railroading and rail transit as only a railfan could. In addition,
his passion for classic TV and films (particularly westerns) and
Japanese anime prompted him to help found the Philadelphia Animation
Society in 1982, a social group that still gathers monthly to watch
all kinds of new and classic Japanese anime TV and films.

I knew Bill since 1984 through the anime group, and we crossed over
into the model railroading hobby at the old Penn Model Railroaders
club in the basement of the Towne Building on the U of Penn campus
here in Philadelphia, in 1987. After that, some time at the Delco
Area Railroaders in N scale (D.A.R.N.) modular layout club in the
late 1980s-early 1990s. Then East Penn from 1997 until, well, until
this past weekend. I'll miss our dinners before meetings, his
straight talk, and his sometimes biting wit.

No arrangements have been made as of yet. Anyone who knew Bill,
please contact me off list and I will do my best to keep you updated.

I knew Bill for nearly forty years, and considered him one of my
closest friends. He will be missed. He's the guy who turned me onto
anime, and, through that, into furry... Indeed, were it not for Bill
providing a meeting place, the East Coast furry fandom might not have
flourished, ultimately leading to Anthrocon...

So raise a glass to Bill's memory. He helped make it all possible...
